Andros has really come into its own as a travel destination in recent years. It’s become a favored getaway not too far from Athens, perfect for those seeking a high-quality, relaxing break. The island is renowned for its rocky coastline dotted with crystal-clear waters and its deeply rooted traditions and customs.
The landscape of Andros is wonderfully varied, featuring everything from towering mountains and vine-laden expanses to cypress groves, flowing streams, therapeutic springs, olive groves, and enchanting beaches.
If you’re someone who steers clear of the overly commercialized tourist traps, Andros is a gem of a spot for your vacation. It’s my kind of place too—peaceful, authentic, and breathtakingly beautiful.
Below, you’ll find a list of the best places to stay in Andros, helping you pinpoint the perfect spot for your visit.
1. Chora of Andros, best area to stay in Andros island
Chora of Andros (town of Andros) is easily one of the most picturesque spots on the island. Nestled on a peninsula along the island’s eastern coast, the town is a charming blend of neoclassical mansions and traditional Cycladic architecture.
Stepping through the preserved gate into the old town feels like entering another realm. It’s a captivating experience.
The town features two main squares. One is paved with large stones and is a hub of cafes, restaurants, and sweet shops. The other square is marble-lined and home to the statue of the Unknown Sailor, a poignant symbol of the town’s maritime legacy.
Just off the coast, the Tourlitis Lighthouse stands proudly on a rock in the sea. Built in 1887 and operational by 1897, this 7-meter tall beacon was Greece’s first automated lighthouse, and it’s the only one built on a rock.
Andros Town houses three significant museums:
- The Archaeological Museum
- The Museum of Contemporary Art
- The Maritime Museum
Neimporio beach is the town’s main beach and among the island’s most popular. This sandy, shallow-water beach is ideal for families and is lined with taverns and restaurants.
Paraporti is another large sandy beach nearby, favored by those looking for more adventurous water sports. It’s bordered by salt cedars for shade and also features a beach bar, making it a lively spot to spend the day.
Two other local beaches are Syneti, primarily frequented by locals and located 7 km from the town, and Piso Gialia, known for its crystal-clear waters and stunning seabed.
Andros Town is not just a feast for the eyes but also the most convenient place to stay on the island, with the largest variety of accommodations available.

Gavrio, the main port of Andros, sits on the island’s western tip. It’s about 32 kilometers from the capital, Chora, and has regular ferry connections to the port of Rafina, which is roughly a two-hour ride away.
Originally a quaint fishing village, Gavrio began to blossom into a tourist destination in the late 1960s. Today, it’s a bustling hub with an array of restaurants, taverns, bars, cafes, and shops, offering plenty of accommodations, from rental rooms and hotels to organized camping.
Just four kilometers from the harbor lies the Tower of St. Peter, dating back to the 4th-3rd century BC. Standing at 20 meters, its commanding position offers breathtaking sea views.
Nearby, the beaches of Chryssi Ammos and Agios Petros are popular spots. These organized beaches are perfect for those who love vibrant seaside settings.

With a plethora of shops and a vibrant nightlife, it’s become a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.
Nestled in a picturesque bay, Batsi harbor is filled with both fishing boats and pleasure vessels. This charming setting draws a significant number of visitors, offering a wide range of accommodations from hotels to private rentals.
Don’t miss the archaeological site at Ypsili, discovered in 1980. It’s one of the most significant fortified settlements in the area, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Batsi beach, with its golden sands and shallow waters, is perfect for all visitors. It’s particularly popular for nighttime swims, which I find quite magical. Nearby beaches like Kolona, Stivari, and Agia Marina also offer beautiful escapes into nature.
The nightlife in Batsi is the liveliest on the island. Bars and clubs buzz until the early hours, making it the heart of Andros’s social scene.

5. Ormos Korthiou, best area to stay in Andros for the Grias To Pidima beach
Ormos Korthiou, often simply referred to as Korthi, is a stunning village located at the southern tip of Andros, about 25 kilometers from Chora. It’s a serene haven that perfectly balances relaxation with a bit of fun.
Korthi boasts three sandy beaches that are sure to impress any visitor.

- The most renowned beach in Andros, however, is Tis Grias to Pidima Beach, famous for its striking sea rock. Agios Petros is a quaint traditional settlement on the western side of Andros, situated just above Gavrio. This village is home to the cylindrical Tower of Agios Petros that I mentioned earlier—an intriguing historical site definitely worth exploring.
Despite its hillside setting, Agios Petros boasts its own beach, making it an excellent choice for your stay. The beach of Agios Petros is stunningly beautiful, with soft sands stretching to make it the largest on the island.
Even during the busy high season, it never feels overcrowded, thanks to its expansive size. The waters are crystal clear and shallow enough for children to enjoy safely.
Along the beach, you’ll find all the amenities you could need—umbrellas, sun loungers, and a variety of beach bars and taverns dotting the coastline.
