Santorini isn’t just known for its beautiful sunsets. There is so much more to see and do on this amazing island. From stunning views and beaches to ancient history and charming villages, it’s easy to see why Santorini is such a popular place to visit.
A common question people ask is how many days are enough to enjoy Santorini. The truth is, it depends on what kind of traveler you are and how much time or money you want to spend. But if you’re short on time or trying not to spend too much, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the best parts of Santorini in just three days.
That’s right – three days are enough to see the main attractions, try some local activities, and relax a little too. If you’re planning a quick trip to this beautiful volcanic island, this three-day guide will help you make the most of your time. It includes the top places to visit, fun things to do, and the best places to stay.
1st Day
1. Fira
Start your Santorini trip in Fira, the capital of island. Fira is a lovely town with whitewashed houses, narrow alleys, and amazing views of the caldera. It’s a great place to walk around, take photos, and enjoy the local atmosphere. While you’re in Fira, make time to visit two interesting museums. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum of Santorini both have fascinating items that tell the story of the island’s past.
2. Red beach & White beach
After exploring Fira, head about 12 kilometers away to visit two of the island’s most unique beaches – Red Beach and White Beach.
Red Beach is especially eye-catching because of its deep red cliffs and sand. The beach also has dark pebbles that add to its dramatic look.
Not far from there is White Beach, which is surrounded by tall white cliffs. The sand here is mixed with black pebbles, showing the island’s volcanic roots. The contrast between the cliffs and the sand makes this beach very special.
3. Akrotiri Archaeological Site
Next, travel just over 5 kilometers from White Beach to reach the Akrotiri Archaeological Site. This is one of the most important historical sites in Santorini. The ancient town of Akrotiri was buried by a volcanic eruption and remained hidden until it was discovered in 1967. The site is very well-preserved, and walking through it feels like stepping into the past.
While you’re in the area, consider visiting the nearby lighthouse. Built in the 19th century, the lighthouse offers amazing views of the sea. To save time, you can book a skip-the-line ticket for Akrotiri so you don’t have to wait in long lines.
4. Wine tasting
To finish your day, enjoy a wine tasting. Santorini is known for its excellent wines and lovely vineyards. Taking a wine tour is a must. If you can, book one around sunset. Drinking fine local wine while watching the sun set over the sea is an unforgettable experience and one of the best ways to enjoy the island.
I highly recommend the tour we chose as well. It includes visits to three wineries in Santorini, with transportation provided, wine tasting, and a variety of appetizers. A unique experience! You can book it from here.
2nd Day
1. Caldera cruise
After settling into the island’s rhythm, it’s time to experience one of Santorini’s top activities – a cruise around the caldera. This cruise usually lasts around six hours and includes visits to the volcanic islets Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni, and Thirassia. You can walk up the volcano on Nea Kameni, swim in the hot springs at Palea Kameni, and enjoy the quiet beauty of Thirassia. This trip offers a different view of the island and its unique landscape. Be sure to bring your camera – you’ll want to capture these beautiful sights. Book the spot for the cruise here!
2. Oia
In the afternoon, visit the village of Oia, which is about 14.5 kilometers from Fira. Oia is one of the most beautiful villages on the island, known for its amazing sunsets. It’s located on the northwestern tip of Santorini and is famous for its white houses, blue-domed churches, and narrow streets that run along the cliffs.
As you walk through Oia, you’ll notice the houses built into the rock, as well as charming windmills and cozy shops. Oia is very popular during sunset, so expect crowds. If you prefer a more peaceful experience, try finding a quiet spot outside the center of the village to watch the sun go down.
3. Imerovigli
After Oia, head to Imerovigli, which is about 9.4 kilometers away. Imerovigli sits high up on the cliffs, about 300 meters above sea level, and is often called the “balcony of the Aegean.” It’s a quiet village with some of the best views of the caldera. Although Oia is famous for sunsets, Imerovigli has equally stunning views and fewer people.
If you enjoy walking, visit Skaros Rock, the ruins of a medieval castle. There is also a small church nearby called Panagia Theoskepasti. The walk is best done in the late afternoon when the weather is cooler and the sunlight is softer. The views at this time of day are absolutely beautiful.
3rd Day
1. Vlychada beach
Begin your third day at Vlychada Beach, which is about 10 kilometers from Fira. This beach is one of the most scenic on the island. It has soft sand, dark pebbles, and tall cliffs in the background, giving it a unique and peaceful atmosphere. After a swim, you can relax on a sunbed at a nearby beach bar and enjoy a drink in the morning sun.
2. Perivolos beach & Perissa beach
From Vlychada, drive about 3.2 kilometers to reach Perivolos and Perissa beaches.
Perivolos is a lively beach known for its black sand and fun vibe. It’s full of beach bars, restaurants, and places to hang out.
Right next to it is Perissa Beach, which has the same dark sand and clear waters. Both beaches are well-organized and great for spending the afternoon by the sea.
3. Kasteli of Emporio
Next, make your way to the village of Emporio, about 3.1 kilometers from Perissa. Emporio is one of the largest villages on the island. In the center of the village is Kasteli, a historic neighborhood made of buildings constructed from volcanic stone. The narrow alleys and unique homes give the area a quiet, old-world charm.
People still live in this part of the village, which makes it feel very real and authentic. Walking around here feels like stepping back in time.
4. Pyrgos Kallistis
From Emporio, continue to Pyrgos Kallistis, about 4.7 kilometers away. Pyrgos is the highest village in Santorini and used to be home to one of the island’s five castles. Today, it’s a charming place to explore. The village has a main square at the entrance to the old castle, and around 50 churches are scattered throughout.
One of the most interesting is the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, built between 1660 and 1661. This church is both a historic site and a beautiful example of local architecture.
5. Kamari beach
Next, drive about 5.2 kilometers to Kamari Beach, located on the southeast coast of the island. Like other beaches in Santorini, Kamari is covered in black sand and pebbles and has clear blue water. Even though it’s a popular spot, the beach is wide enough that it rarely feels too crowded. There are many cafes and restaurants along the beach, making it a great place to relax, grab a meal, and enjoy the view.
6. Ancient Thera
If you’re still up for an adventure, visit Ancient Thera, located about 3.9 kilometers from Kamari Beach. You’ll have to walk about 1 kilometer uphill to reach the site. Ancient Thera is an old city that sits on top of Mesa Vouno mountain. It was founded in the 8th century BC by Spartans and was lived in until the early Byzantine period. The ruins give you a look into the island’s long history, and the views from the top are some of the best in Santorini.
Where to stay in Santorini
If you’re only spending a few days on the island, staying in Fira is a smart choice. It’s the island’s capital and puts you close to restaurants, shops, and transportation. Plus, you’ll get an amazing view of the caldera right from your hotel.
If you’re looking for something a bit more peaceful or romantic, you might enjoy staying in Oia or Imerovigli. Both of these places are beautiful and have their own unique charm, with stunning views and a quieter atmosphere.
Here are a few recommended places to stay in Fira:

- Platia has clean, modern rooms in a central location.
- Apartments Antonia is great if you want a fully equipped kitchen.
- Santorini Camping & Hostel is a good budget option, with both rooms and tents, plus a pool and a restaurant.
