Where to Stay in Ioannina

Ioannina, affectionately known as Yannena, is Epirus largest city and among most significant urban centers of Greece. The city’s pride is Lake Pamvotida—a picturesque gem that kisses the city’s edge.

If you’re looking to soak up Ioannina true essence, staying near the Castle and the Lake is a fantastic choice. However, the city center, Perama, Amfithea with its Ioannina Island, and Dodoni also offer unique attractions.

Getting around Ioannina city center is a breeze due to its compact nature. If you venture to stay in Perama, Amfithea, or Dodoni, having a car might be a good idea.

1. Lake Pamvotida, best area to stay in Ioannina

Pamvotida Lake
Pamvotida Lake

Lake Pamvotida stands as a breathtaking focal point in Ioannina. In the early morning, you’ll find it shrouded in mist, which clears up as the day progresses, perfect for a lakeside stroll.

Alongside the serene views, you’ll spot locals biking, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. The dreamlike views include the island on one side and the majestic mountains of Peristeri and Tzoumerka on the other.

And if you’re in the mood to relax, why not sit back at one of the traditional cafes and watch the world go by, with ducks gliding across the lake?

Very close to the lake is the Castle of Ioannina, which makes for an easy day of exploration after a leisurely walk by the water.

For me, this area around the lake and castle is the best place to stay in Ioannina. Prices are comparable to the rest of the city, but accommodation options are more limited, so booking early is advisable.

2. Downtown Ioannina

Downtown Ioannina includes the old town with its quaint cobbled streets and the modern section. Four squares add to the city’s charm, including the central Pyrrus Square with underground parking, close to which are Pargis Square, the lower Andras Papandreou Square, and Mavili Square near the lake.

Thanks to its large student population, Ioannina enjoys a vibrant nightlife with affordable cafes, bars, and eateries open into the early hours.

If being close to all the sights, modern amenities, and nightlife is your preference, this is the ideal area to find accommodations.

Perama, noted for its spectacular cave near Lake Pamvotida, was discovered during WWII and consists of multiple rooms filled with stalactites and stalagmites. If staying away from the central area but still near the lake appeals to you, Perama is an excellent alternative with good accommodation options at reasonable prices.

Ioannina Island

Amfithea, nestled at the foot of Mitsikeli Mountain on the lake’s north shore, is a picturesque rural setting. A short 10-minute journey from here takes you to Ioannina Island, where time seems to stand still.

The island, though small, houses seven monasteries and a welcoming community known for its hospitality, especially during monastery festivals. For those looking for adventure, consider staying on Ioannina Island itself at the Little Island Resort.

5. Dodoni

Ancient Theater of Dodonis

Dodoni, a mountainous settlement situated 20km south of Ioannina and renowned for its ancient oracle of Zeus, is a significant cultural site. Though 30 minutes from Ioannina city, staying here offers a tranquil alternative, far from the bustling city life.
